About me
Candy is a passionate long-term editor and advocate for free knowledge, based in Botswana. With a deep commitment to addressing knowledge gaps, particularly in underrepresented areas, Candy has played a pivotal role in the Wikimedia movement across Africa.
My work
Here is a partial list of what I have helped to develop from co-conceptualisation and strategy, to ongoing management and communications. Her journey as a Wikimedian began with a focus on community building, gender equity, and the representation of marginalized groups. As the Program Coordinator for the Wikimedia Community User Group Botswana, she leads efforts to create and expand content on topics such as gender, climate, indigenous languages, and the creative industries. She has organized impactful events, including Wiki boot camps, edit-a-thons, and panel discussions, empowering communities to contribute to Wikipedia and other Wikimedia platforms. Candy's contributions extend beyond Botswana. In 2021, she worked with Wiki In Africa, training women from nine African countries to become champions and project leads for gender gap-related Wikipedia initiatives. Her dedication to inclusivity and decolonizing knowledge was evident in her participation at global events like the Decolonizing the Internet Convening and FIFAfrica22, where she advocated for solutions to address systemic knowledge inequities.
Her leadership was instrumental in the creation and evolution of WikiIndaba, a regional conference for African Wikimedians, reflecting her belief in the power of in-person connections to drive change and innovation. As a speaker at platforms like Wikimania and the Wiki Student Summit, she has shared her vision for a future where free knowledge thrives across the continent.
Candy also leads projects that intersect with her advocacy for feminist diversity, inclusion, and climate justice, demonstrating her multifaceted approach to driving meaningful change in collaboration with Affilates such as Black Lunch Table as a Regional Proxy, WikiAfrica Former project facilitator for Wiki Loves Women Focus Group, Art & Feminism, Afro Creatives, Africa Knowledge Initiative, Whose Knowledge, Wiki Gap etc.
